What Is An Ambivert?
I’m what is referred to as an “ambivert” – unlike extroverts, I enjoy my own company. I feel I’m happiest when I’m alone with my thoughts, a good book and my guitar.
However, unlike introverts, I feel totally comfortable engaging in small talk with people I just met. I also enjoy speaking and performing in front of a large audience. That is to say, I’m somewhere in the spectrum between being a total introvert or a total extrovert.
Introverts and Extroverts During Covid-19
Since Covid hit, I’ve been spending a lot of time on Reddit, specifically in the psychology subreddits. There are subreddits dedicated to certain personality types. For example, there’s a subreddit dedicated to those who fall under the INTJ personality type using the Myers Brigg Type Indicator (which I fall under).
Perusing these subreddits, here are my observations:
Covid-19 Has Been Great For Introverts
It appears that with the lockdowns and the ability to work from home, introverts have been having the best time of their lives! Imagine not having to go to school or work and engage in petty small talk with people you don’t care about just for the sake of adhering to social norms! Leaving aside the deleterious economic effects on peoples’ livelihoods, for many introverts, Covid has been a blessing to them.
Covid-19 Has Been A Prison For Extroverts
On the other side, extroverts for the most part feel like they’ve been locked in prison since Covid hit and it’s driving them crazy. They cannot see their friends, visit their relatives, host dinner parties, etc. I’m going to hazard a guess that the majority of the anti-lockdown folks are extroverts who are protesting the lockdown policies as an assault on their psychological well-being.
So where do you fall on the spectrum? Are you an introvert or extrovert? And how have you been faring during Covid?
As an aside: the reason why I’m this rooftop is that I’m scouting a location to play a celebratory version of “The Star Spangled Banner” REALLY LOUDLY if Trump actually loses to Biden on November 3rd. However, my gut tells me that Trump might actually squeak out another victory via the Electoral College. Let’s hope I’m wrong.
